Understanding EN 388 Mechanical Protection

EN 388 is the European standard governing gloves for warehouse work that protect against mechanical hazards: abrasion, cut, tear, and puncture. Each hazard gets a performance level (1–4 for most categories, up to level 5 for cut resistance). Higher numbers mean better protection, but they often come with trade-offs in dexterity and breathability.

For warehouse picking and packing, abrasion resistance matters most—boxes and pallets wear through glove palms fast. Cut resistance becomes critical when handling banded loads, metal strapping, or broken packaging. Puncture protection helps with nails, staples, and rough pallet edges.
