Understanding EN ISO 20471 Certification Levels

EN ISO 20471:2013 sets two certification levels for hi vis t shirts based on fluorescent fabric area and reflective tape coverage. Class 1 requires 0.14m² of fluorescent material and 0.10m² of reflective tape – this suits warehouse environments, low-risk logistics operations, and sites where vehicle speeds stay below 25mph. Class 2 demands 0.50m² of fluorescent fabric and 0.13m² of reflective tape, which becomes legally mandatory for roadside work, building sites with moving plant machinery, and any environment where traffic exceeds 25mph.

The reflective tape placement matters as much as the amount. Horizontal bands across the chest and over both shoulders ensure you're visible from front, back, and side angles – critical when you're bending, crouching, or working at ground level where vehicle operators might lose sight of you. HSE guidance specifies that darker conditions require greater amounts of high-visibility clothing, and retroreflective material becomes essential for headlight visibility after dusk.

Cotton vs Moisture-Wicking Fabrics

Cotton hi vis t shirts typically use 150-180gsm fabric weight that breathes naturally and feels soft during extended wear. Cotton absorbs sweat but holds moisture against your skin, which can feel heavy during sustained physical work in high temperatures. Coolmax and similar polyester moisture-wicking fabrics weigh 140-160gsm and use four-channel fibres that pull moisture away from your skin to the outer surface where it evaporates – these dry approximately three times faster than cotton equivalents.

Long-sleeved high visibility t shirts provide UPF 40+ sun protection for outdoor shifts whilst maintaining breathability. Crew neck designs sit comfortably under overalls and boilersuits without bunching at the collar. Orange high visibility t shirts meet Network Rail's RIS-3279-TOM standard for trackside work, whilst yellow remains the preferred colour for highways maintenance and general building sites due to better contrast against ambient backgrounds.

Maintenance and Replacement Guidelines

Wash at 40°C maximum to maintain EN ISO 20471 certification. Avoid fabric softener – it breaks down the reflective properties of the tape over time. Replace your t shirts after approximately 50 industrial washes, or sooner if the reflective tape shows cracking, peeling, or the fluorescent colour fades noticeably. Faded fluorescent fabric loses its day-time visibility effectiveness even if the reflective tape still works at night.
