Standards and System Compatibility

EN 397:2025 replaced the 2012 version with stricter requirements: helmets and accessories must be tested together as a complete system. That includes ear defenders, visors, lights, and communication equipment. Universal compatibility claims mean nothing if the combination hasn't been certified. Check that your chosen accessory is approved for use with your specific helmet model – mismatched components can compromise the helmet's impact resistance or electrical insulation properties.

The standard also distinguishes between Type 1 (ground-level work) and Type 2 (working at height) protection. If your team works at elevation, accessories must not interfere with chin strap function or increase the risk of helmet displacement during a fall.

Key Selection Criteria

Start with the hazard, not the accessory. Construction sites with overhead spark risk need face visors tested for molten metal splash. Cold-store environments require insulated winter liners that don't compress the helmet's suspension system. High-noise areas – anywhere above 85 dB – need ear defenders; helmets with integrated mounts keep hands free and prevent loss.

Common mistake: choosing a hard hat sweatband based on price alone. Cheap foam degrades quickly under sweat and UV exposure, losing absorbency within weeks. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics and replaceable designs. A quality sweatband prevents irritation and keeps sweat out of your eyes during long shifts – small detail, significant safety impact.

Maintenance and Replacement Cycles

Accessories wear faster than helmets. Replace sweatbands when they lose absorbency or develop odour that cleaning won't shift. Chin straps fray and lose elasticity – if the helmet shifts during a head tilt test, replace the strap immediately. Visor scratches compromise visibility; if you can't see clearly through it, it's done. Helmet lanyards prevent drops when working at height, but inspect webbing monthly for cuts or abrasion – a worn lanyard is worse than none, giving false confidence.

Keep replaceable padding on hand. Suspension systems and foam inserts compress over time, reducing impact protection. HSE data shows approximately 142 workplace fatalities annually in the UK, with 'struck by a moving object' ranking third – head protection saves lives, but only when properly maintained and fitted. Accessories extend helmet lifespan, but they need regular inspection and timely replacement to remain effective.
